Sophie's* Story
Sophie’s* Story
An inspiring yet simple story of a girl who heard the cry and acted.
Sophie* is 17 years old, lives in Belgium, and has a passion for justice and seeing survivors of human trafficking rescued and restored.
A powerful dance performance revealing the horrific truth of human trafficking opened Sophie's* eyes to the existence of this issue. Shocked and intrigued, she looked into it, discovering a whole culture and market that exploits young girls, subjecting them to unimaginable abuse.
“I felt really angry, helpless and guilty for my ignorance,” said Sophie*.
What followed is nothing short of inspiring.
No matter how helpless she felt, she started helping. She found IT’S NOT OK Projects online and purchased bracelets for about 100 euros ($110 USD). She then went on to fundraise by selling armbands and baked cookies, going door to door. She roped in some friends and together they raised 280 euros ($310 USD). It doesn’t even stop there. The fire and passion within her has just grown and has inspired her to look into volunteering in our SHE Rescue Home in Cambodia.
By including anyone who puts their hand up through volunteering opportunities, we get to see people activated in their passions and fighting for those they haven’t met.
What Sophie* shared with us is a beautiful story of how someone’s artistic expression illuminated the darker parts of our world to a girl that was willing to make a change. By playing our part, whether it be raising awareness through whatever we do best or by raising money through simple means, we can see a whole lot happen to the trafficking culture of Cambodia.
