Supporting Families with extraordinary children

Raising extraordinary young people with disabilities has unique joys and challenges for families.

Every family needs a community to help raise their children. Sadly, not all families have a community around them or find the supports they need for raise young people with disabilities. Some families fall through the gaps in services and society. And it’s not ok. We are determined to help these families!

We met many of these extraordinary families in Brisbane through our Community Care Project. There was such a diverse array of supports, needs, joys and challenges we wanted to provide specific help and so The Extraordinary Initiative was launched.

How extraordinary are these families? We have heard some heart breaking stories of parent’s asking for support and being told the only option left is to relinquish care of their young people into an already inundated residential care system. Those struggling to protect their vulnerable children from being preyed upon and exploited because of their trusting nature. Families who have faced violence as a result of their child’s disability and being told that young people like theirs end up in prison. These families do not want to give up but need help building a thriving life.

These families and their young people are EXTRAORDINARY and deserve a fulfilling life where they can be seen, heard, included, empowered and supported on their journey. Extraordinary means beyond what is usual, ordinary, regular, or established. We are ready to be the extra in the ordinary….are you ready?

This is an entirely new idea - to provide support for the entire family of these young people and share some of the administrative weight in caring for these young people. We need volunteers and funds to help these families face these challenges with support and hope.
