Finding a New Place to Call Home
Case closures and reintegrations don't always look the same. For Makara* and Kumpak* reintegration means finding a new place to call home.
Sisters Makara* and Kumpak* have been living in the SHE Rescue Home for the last year after their mother left them without explanation and they were abused by someone in their community. Returning home wasn’t a good option as their safety or access to school couldn’t be guaranteed. Their only other relative, their Grandmother is too old to look after them as she needs to support herself. We had been searching for the best long term accommodation for them to integrate too as one of the aims of the SHE Rescue Home is only providing short term accommodation until it is safe for girls to be in their local communities.
In July they were reintegrated with into a long term care partner organisation. Since moving into the long-term accommodation their grandmother has become supportive of their new living arrangement. Living there gives them the opportunity to continue their studies long term. Their new home is not far from their family so can still visit their grandmother and mother regularly.
A different kind of case closure.
Where possible and safe the goal is always reunification with parents or extended family, but in some scenarios, this just isn’t possible. For this reason, we build relationships and partnerships with other organisations we trust in Cambodia who can provide services we don't. Just how we can’t do our work without your help, NGO’s in Cambodia can’t do work of social justice without working together.
Where there is unity in mission, we see new doors open. Doors that wouldn’t open if we were only working alone. Together we can make a bigger impact than we ever could apart.
We will close their cases into the care of the long-term accommodation provider. With full social work and counselling services, the girls will continue to have the support they need, and most importantly they can remain together. Makara* wants to be a Doctor and Kumpak* wants to be a Police Officer.
We are excited to see them continue to encounter opportunities that will open doors for them to become all they dream to be!
