Dance and Swimming Lessons

It's the Little Things

What is it that makes you feel safe?

The genuine feeling of safety goes beyond the confirmation of physical security, of locked doors and alarms. Whether there’s a genuine threat or not, if fear creeps in you don’t feel safe.

Our #1 priority is the physical safety of the young survivors living in the SHE Rescue Home. But we can’t stop there and assume the girls can comprehend that now they are safe, unlike before.

The schedule of the Home is significant in this way. Consistent and familiar routine is key to feeling safe. You know what’s coming; it’s as simple as that. The girls know their mornings look the same every day. They know that on Tuesdays, they go bike riding after school. They know when they go to bed each night.

We keep it consistent so they can feel safe.

Recently, the girls have started regular soccer training. They do it at the same time each week - a time where they know they get to be active and they get to learn how to have full control over their bodies.

We teach them how to work as a team and rely on each other, how to feel safe knowing the people around them are actually dependable.

A slot of time on their weekends allows for new and different activities. In the past few months, they were taught a dance lesson, which opened them up to expression through movement and allowed them to develop a new skill that again focused on the control of their bodies.

With flash flooding being a severe threat in Cambodia, learning to swim is a really important lesson for the safety of these girls. We recently had a volunteer teach swimming lessons.

There is so much intention and purpose behind the small, everyday decisions and activities at the SHE Rescue Home.

It’s so important to us that the Home doesn't feel like a prison that hides survivors away, but instead it intentionally creates a beautiful, healthy life for each girl that comes through the Home’s doors.

In all that we do, we want the girls to feel safe, loved and filled with hope. Everything has that purpose behind it, right down to the Thursday afternoon soccer.
